Dear Charleston County Medical Society Members, Over the last few years, the leadership of the SCMA has been discussing potential changes and improvements to the process of submitting policy resolutions by the SCMA membership and County Medical Societies. They are also looking at making changes to handling these resolutions at the Reference Committees and the House of Delegates meeting, which takes place each spring at the SCMA Annual meeting. What is Docs Adopt? Docs Adopt partners physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants with local schools to serve on the school wellness committee. This initiative offers physicians a structured opportunity to provide support, knowledge, and motivation to schools as they implement evidence-based strategies and promote a culture of wellness. ‘MUSC’s Match Day’: Over 100 students find out their residency placement
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Med school graduate students across the nation, including in the Lowcountry, are spending the day celebrating. Over 100 students at MUSC found out where they will be spending their residency program on Friday morning at Charleston Music Hall. Exactly 159 students got their match, with 44 staying at MUSC. What a great month! We had so much to be thankful for as we celebrated Black History Month, Women’s Physician Day, and Red Heart Healthy Month. Black History Month Lecture Featuring Dr. Rana Hogarth
REGISTER HERE “Professional Pursuits and the Making of Race: Medicalizing Blackness in the American Atlantic.” Dr. Rana Hogarth focuses on the medical and scientific constructions of race during the era of slavery and beyond. She is the author of Medicalizing Blackness: Making Racial Difference in the Atlantic World (University of North Carolina Press, 2017). She received her PhD from Yale University and currently is an associate professor at the University of Illinois in the Department of History.

DHEC published new flu numbers for South Carolina: It keeps getting worse
As flu numbers continue to increase we all need to take precautions. Local hospitals are taking precautions by limiting visitors. All people are encouraged to get the flu shot - it is not too late and it will lessen the severity if you should contract the flu. CCMS friend elected chairman of the American Medical Association
Gerald Harmon, a family doctor with a long history of practice and physician advocacy in South Carolina, has been elected chairman of the American Medical Association. Harmon is a member of the S.C. Medical Association and served on its board and as its president. He has practiced medicine in Georgetown County for more than three decades. He grew up in Newberry and also serves as a clinical professor of family medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina and the University of South Carolina. Source: Post&Courier

This weekend will mark the one year anniversary of Mother Emanuel AME Church shooting in Charleston which changed the lives of so many. There has been much sadness due to the tragic event while there as also been tremendous healing and the grace shown by so many. AMA Zika Virus Resource Center For Physicians And The Public
With global infection rates of the Zika virus increasing rapidly, physicians should be prepared to handle possible cases of the virus and answer patients’ questions. No locally-acquired vector-borne Zika virus cases have been reported in the continental United States, but cases have been confirmed in returning travelers. Mandatory for All South Carolina Licensed Physicians Available at No Cost for the SC Physician Community As you are aware, the South Carolina Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP), also known as Senate Bill 840, was signed into law on June 6, 2014. Through this statute, South Carolina licensed physicians are required to obtain two continuing medical education credit hours related to the approved procedures of prescribing and monitoring controlled substances listed in Schedules II, III, and IV.
