Have you ever left a doctor's appointment with more questions than answers? You're not alone. For many people, especially in underserved and minority communities, the challenge isn't just getting to a doctor. It's understanding what the doctor said once you get there.
That's the healthcare knowledge gap. And for more than 20 years, CCMS board member Dr. Thaddeus J. Bell has been working to close it.
Who Is Dr. Thaddeus Bell?
Dr. Bell is the founder and CEO of Closing the Gap in Healthcare, a nonprofit health education initiative based in the Carolinas. What started as a mission to address healthcare disparities has grown into a statewide movement, reaching people through weekly radio tips, church talks, barbershop conversations, and community health events.
His message is straightforward: you can't fix what you don't understand. And too many people are waiting too long to seek care because they don't recognize the signs that something is wrong.
Why This Work Matters
Research consistently shows that health literacy plays a major role in health outcomes. When people understand what their numbers mean, what symptoms to watch for, and what options they have, they are more likely to seek care early and follow through on treatment.
Dr. Bell's work meets people where they already are: at church, in barbershops, on the radio, and in their communities. By using trusted, familiar spaces to share health information, Closing the Gap in Healthcare helps community members feel seen, informed, and empowered to take action.
Closing the Gap, One Conversation at a Time
The organization covers health topics in plain, everyday language, from blood pressure and colon cancer screening to knowing what questions to ask your doctor. These aren't complicated medical lectures. They're the kinds of conversations people wish they had sooner.
If you've ever thought, "Why didn't someone tell me this?" that's exactly who this work is for.
A Free Resource for the Whole Community
Closing the Gap in Healthcare is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, meaning its resources are free and built entirely around community benefit. No clinic visits required. No insurance needed. Just clear, trusted health education delivered through platforms people already use and trust.

If something doesn't feel right, don't wait. Understanding is the first step toward getting help.
